The Great Green Wall of Africa Foundation (GGWoA), in partnership with the Senegalese Agency for Reforestation and the Great Green Wall (ASERGMV) and the Department of Water, Forests, Hunting and Soil Conservation (DEFCCS), restored and planted trees on 5 hectares of a former quarry. A variety of 2.5 to 3m high seedlings of species best suited to quarry rehabilitation, such as Acacia seyal, nilotica and senegalensis, and native species from the area such as khaya senegalensis, baobab and jujifis mauritiania, were planted in the Thies classified forest to help combat flooding in the city of and combat climate change.
300 young African students and members of the Xeyu Ndaw Yi youth employment program from Thiès, Rufisque, Pikine, Dakar and Mbour took part in this citizen reforestation day.
*A follow-up mechanism under the technical coordination and logistical support of DEFCCS and ASERGMV, with a permanent team of 10 agents and 2 tricycles for watering until the next rainy season to guarantee success.
As a reminder, the recently launched Great Green Wall Foundation of Africa (GGWoA) intends to play a key role in the implementation of the continental Great Green Wall project by carrying out fund-raising and financing activities to benefit communities in the fight against climate change. In 2024, it plans to organize an international forum for the national and international private sector on the Great Green Wall.
